Understanding pattern instructions
Sewing Lingo...Have you had the experience during your sewing sessions of having to reread the pattern instructions over and over again. This is a bit normal when first starting out.
As a sewing teacher, I see my students confused while reading the instruction. They come across a word for a sewing technique and are given no other information about how to do it. And if you're not really familiar with the sewing techniques those words can slow you down and throw off your progress.
I thought a great way to speed up your sewing progress is for you to simply know and understand some of the basic techniques which will allow you to get thru those instructions much more easily!
Hello, I'm Shawnelle.
I have been a costume designer based out of Los Angeles for the past 20 years, designing feature films, specializing in comedies! You can find my list of credits on IMDB. Before costume designing I was a fashion designer creating gowns for the Hollywood crowd in my Pacific Palisades, CA studio. My whole career has been around fashion and sewing.
About 10 years ago I moved to the east coast to be closer to the migrating film productions. I landed in a beautiful lake town - Mooresville, North Carolina which I just fell in love with. A few months in, I started a school called Future Fashion Designers, a school for kids mainly, to teach them sewing and all about fashion design. My plan was to do this for a year or two but it ended up being so much fun working with kids that we are still here and growing everyday. We have fashion clubs, summer camps and all kinds of fashion classes. The funnest part of owning a school is seeing our young designers growing up to adult size and wanting to go to design school and pursue a career in fashion, YAY!
This brings me to start an additional endeavor, to mentor these students along their path to being a fashion designer (and hopefully some want to be costume designers!) I know when I was starting out I had my own vision of how I thought things worked and how I wanted my career to go. Bringing this to students will help with their vision of whats possible and to see how the business works.
I also am really enjoying teaching my adult students more about sewing creativity. And recently started a fashion sewing retreat (because adults want to camp too!) You can see more about our retreats on the website campsewsocial.com and our facebook page. I also have a YouTube channel where I do some upcycling projects. It's called "Sew Shawnelle."
I hope your enjoy my mix of classes and would love to hear from you!
Stay tuned for more classes
